About Unakite

Unakite is a unique, mottled green and pink metamorphic stone composed primarily of green epidote, pink orthoclase feldspar, and colourless to grey quartz. This striking combination gives it an earthy yet gentle appearance, with a softly blended pattern of mossy greens and salmon pinks. The stone is typically opaque with a dull to silky lustre and ranks around 6 to 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it durable enough for everyday use.

Unakite is not a mineral in itself, but rather a granite-based rock, formed under hydrothermal conditions where existing granite has been altered by the introduction of epidote. Its balanced fusion of light and dark elements symbolises harmony, unity, and emotional balance.

First discovered in the Unaka Mountains of North Carolina, USA — from which it takes its name — Unakite can also be found in Virginia, South Africa, Brazil, China, and Sierra Leone. The USA remains its most abundant and popular source, particularly for jewellery and carving.
