About Sodalite

Sodalite is a richly coloured, deep blue crystal often adorned with white veining or patches of grey, calcite, or black inclusions. It is a tectosilicate mineral composed primarily of sodium aluminium silicate with chlorine (Na₈(Al₆Si₆O₂₄)Cl₂). Though commonly mistaken for Lapis Lazuli, Sodalite is typically more uniform in colour, with fewer golden flecks and a more grounding, earthy energy.

With a Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6, Sodalite is moderately soft and well-suited to carving, jewellery, palm stones, and meditative tools. It has a slightly waxy to glassy lustre and often displays captivating swirls of midnight blue, indigo, and snow-white, evoking the vastness of the sky or sea.

Sodalite is found in Canada, Brazil, Namibia, Russia, and the United States, with Canadian material—especially from Bancroft, Ontario—being highly regarded for its colour saturation and energetic purity.

• It gained the nickname “Princess Blue” after Princess Margaret of England fell in love with the stone during a royal visit to Canada and incorporated it into her decor.

• Sodalite’s name is derived from its high sodium content and has long been associated with order, rationality, and deep thinking.

• In modern metaphysical circles, it is often referred to as the “Stone of Insight” or “Stone of Logic and Intuition,” for its ability to balance intellect with spiritual knowing.
