Geologically it sits in the granite–rhyolite family rather than being a single mineral. Its soft to vivid rose tones are produced by feldspar, while the glittering quartz and dark mica create the characteristic mottled, peppered look.

Most Rosophia on the market is sourced from the Rocky Mountain region of the United States (notably Colorado and New Mexico), with similar material occasionally found in other granitic terrains.
