About Pietersite

Pietersite is a captivating and stormy-looking crystal known for its swirling mix of gold, brown, blue, and grey chatoyancy. Often called the “Tempest Stone,” Pietersite captures the wild, shifting beauty of a thunderstorm, reflecting the raw power of elemental change. It is a rare variety of brecciated chalcedony with embedded fibrous inclusions of Crocidolite (also found in Tiger's Eye and Hawk’s Eye), which create its dramatic flashes and layered effect.

Discovered in 1962 by Sid Pieters in Namibia, this stone is considered relatively new to the crystal world. True Pietersite is still quite rare, with quality specimens primarily sourced from Namibia and China, each with slightly different visual characteristics. Namibian Pietersite tends to be more multicoloured with dramatic chatoyancy, while Chinese Pietersite often features richer reds and golden hues.

With a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7, Pietersite is a durable crystal suited to jewellery, energy tools, and meditation pieces. Its deeply dynamic energy makes it ideal for transformation, spiritual development, and breaking through limiting patterns.
