About Onyx

Onyx is a striking and deeply grounding variety of Chalcedony, which itself is a microcrystalline form of Quartz (SiO₂). What sets Onyx apart is its dark, opaque colouring—most commonly black, but sometimes featuring natural bands of white, brown, or grey. Its clean lines, solid tone, and glassy polish have made it a favourite for centuries in carvings, jewellery, and protective talismans.

Often confused with other black stones, genuine Onyx typically has a very fine texture and can be identified by its subtle banding or its smooth, matte-to-glossy finish. While black is the most common and widely recognised form, Onyx also naturally occurs in earthy reds, browns, and greens, although these variations are less commonly used in metaphysical work.

Major sources of Onyx include India, Brazil, Mexico, Uruguay, and the United States. With a Mohs hardness of around 6.5 to 7, it is strong enough for daily wear and durable enough for use in spiritual tools such as worry stones, spheres, and altarpieces.
