About Larimar

Larimar is a rare, sky-blue variety of the silicate mineral Pectolite (NaCa₂Si₃O₈OH), a sodium calcium hydroxide inosilicate. What sets Larimar apart from other Pectolite is its stunning Caribbean-blue colouring, which results from copper substitution within its crystal structure. It typically displays swirling patterns in hues of aqua, turquoise, white, and seafoam green, resembling sunlight dancing across tropical waters.

Larimar is unique to a single location on Earth — the Barahona region of the Dominican Republic, in the Caribbean. It was discovered in 1916 but not officially recognised or mined until the 1970s, when locals named it Larimar — a combination of "Larissa" (the daughter of the stone’s rediscoverer, Miguel Méndez) and mar, the Spanish word for sea.

This stone is found in cavities within basaltic lava, often near ancient volcanic activity, which gives it a deeply elemental connection to both fire and water. With a Mohs hardness of 4.5–5, Larimar is relatively soft and should be treated with care, especially when worn as jewellery.

Its mesmerising colouration, metaphysical properties, and rarity have made Larimar a highly sought-after crystal, often referred to as the “Stone of Atlantis” or the “Dolphin Stone”.

Healing with Larimar

♥ Calm ♥ Communication ♥ Divine Feminine ♥ Emotional Healing ♥ Self-Expression ♥ Tranquillity ♥ Inner Wisdom ♥ Ocean Energy ♥ Peace ♥ Rebalancing

Larimar is a crystal of serenity, communication, and deep emotional healing. Its soft yet powerful energy resonates most strongly with the Throat Chakra, supporting clear, heartfelt expression and honest communication. It’s especially beneficial for those who struggle to speak their truth or fear confrontation — offering gentle encouragement to express oneself with compassion and clarity.

This stone is deeply connected to the Divine Feminine, radiating nurturing, soothing energy that helps heal emotional wounds, dissolve old patterns, and promote self-forgiveness. It supports emotional release without overwhelm, making it ideal for inner child work and healing trauma held in the subconscious.

Larimar is often referred to as a stone of rebirth and renewal, helping to wash away past sorrow, anxiety, and self-doubt. Its energy is cooling and calming, like stepping into gentle ocean waves — helping to reduce stress, anger, and emotional burnout.

In spiritual work, Larimar is believed to aid connection to Atlantean wisdom, oceanic consciousness, and dolphin energy — awakening a sense of unity, fluidity, and joyful presence. It gently opens the Third Eye and Heart Chakras, inviting deeper intuition and emotional harmony.

Larimar is a wonderful emotional ally for those who feel overwhelmed, overworked, or emotionally shut down. It encourages a more balanced approach to life, helping the user to respond rather than react. Its peaceful energy helps in regulating emotional extremes and calms those prone to panic attacks or emotional outbursts.

As a stone of emotional independence, Larimar helps release attachment to drama and the need for external validation. It gently dissolves self-imposed limitations and fears, empowering the individual to live authentically, speak freely, and love without fear of rejection.

Larimar also supports emotional detachment from toxic relationships and patterns, assisting in the journey of self-healing after emotional abuse or co-dependence. It’s particularly useful during times of grief or major life transitions, as it helps soften sorrow and open the heart to hope again.

Larimar is believed to have a cooling and anti-inflammatory effect, both energetically and physically. It may be supportive in conditions related to the throat, neck, thyroid, and vocal cords, making it beneficial for teachers, singers, and public speakers.

Some holistic practitioners also associate Larimar with balancing the pituitary gland and regulating the body’s temperature, making it useful for menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes. It is said to help alleviate stress-related conditions such as high blood pressure, insomnia, and chronic fatigue.

Larimar’s calming frequency may assist in easing tension headaches, jaw clenching, and muscular tension, especially when caused by emotional stress. Placing it over the heart or holding it during breathwork can help slow the heart rate, regulate breathing, and encourage physical relaxation.

Larimar acts as a bridge between Earth and the sea, body and spirit. It helps dissolve energetic blockages caused by emotional trauma or fear, gently encouraging the soul’s evolution. It enhances intuitive abilities and dream recall, and is often used by energy healers to help clients release karmic imprints or past life patterns.

For spiritual seekers, Larimar aids in connecting with the Higher Self, the Divine Feminine, and angelic or aquatic realms. It invites a sense of cosmic trust — helping us surrender to the flow of life and the wisdom of the universe. Its resonance with both Water and Fire elements brings about emotional transformation, rebirth, and spiritual cleansing.

Historical & Cultural Notes

  • The indigenous Taino people of the Caribbean are believed to have used Larimar long before its official rediscovery. Local legends speak of a blue stone from the sea gifted by the gods.

  • Often associated with the lost civilisation of Atlantis — a theory popularised by the psychic Edgar Cayce — Larimar is sometimes called the Stone of Atlantis for its oceanic energy and rarity.

  • Larimar’s rediscovery in 1974 by Miguel Méndez and Norman Rilling sparked its popularity across the metaphysical community. Its name was chosen to reflect the ocean’s beauty and divine femininity.

  • In metaphysical jewellery and crystal healing circles, Larimar has become a symbol of peaceful power, grace under pressure, and soulful clarity.

Larimar is more than a beautiful gemstone — it’s a mirror of the sea, a whisper of the divine, and a balm for the soul. Whether used in meditation, worn as a talisman, or placed gently on the heart during times of emotional release, this rare and radiant stone brings the tranquil essence of the Caribbean into your life — reminding you to breathe deeply, trust yourself, and flow gently with the tides of transformation.
