The term Mexican Calcite denotes the stone’s primary source—Mexico—though it can also be found in Pakistan, Peru, and Madagascar. Banded Calcite refers to its layered formation: calcium carbonate precipitates from mineral-rich water, often in caves or hot spring environments, and varying mineral content over time deposits distinct layers of colour.

The names Mexican Onyx or Onyx Marble are common in stone and craft trades due to the banded appearance, but they are technically misnomers.
