Crystal Knowledge - Ruby

About Ruby

Ruby is a precious red variety of the mineral corundum (Al₂O₃), coloured by traces of chromium, which gives it its rich crimson hue. When corundum appears in other colours, it’s classified as sapphire—but when it’s red, it’s always ruby. Known as one of the four traditional precious stones (alongside diamond, sapphire, and emerald), Ruby has long been associated with power, vitality, and divine love.

Ruby is exceptionally durable, with a Mohs hardness of 9, making it one of the hardest minerals on Earth. It often forms in hexagonal prismatic crystals and can appear transparent, translucent, or opaque, depending on its origin and quality. Some rubies display asterism, forming a six-rayed star when cut en cabochon, known as Star Ruby.

Ruby deposits are found across the globe, with major sources in Myanmar (Burma), Sri Lanka, Thailand, India, Tanzania, Madagascar, Vietnam, and more recently, Mozambique and Greenland. Burmese rubies have traditionally been the most prized, though African rubies are growing in popularity for their raw, energetic power.

Physical Healing Properties

Ruby is believed to stimulate the circulatory system, blood flow, and heart health, making it a traditional stone of physical vitality and strength. It is often used to combat fatigue, sluggish energy, or feelings of burnout, particularly for those under long-term stress or emotional strain.

Because of its grounding influence, Ruby also supports the reproductive organs, adrenal glands, and lower spine, helping stabilise the root of the body and increase endurance. Its warming energy is thought to boost detoxification, enhance libido, and encourage passion and movement, both emotionally and physically.

Energetically, Ruby strengthens the life force or chi, helping to clear blocked energy and fortify the body’s natural resilience. It’s often used by crystal healers to stimulate recovery, especially after emotional trauma, illness, or deep fatigue.
