Crystal Knowledge - Pyrite

About Pyrite

Pyrite, often nicknamed “Fool’s Gold” due to its brassy, metallic lustre, is an iron sulfide mineral with the formula FeS₂. Its name comes from the Greek word pyr, meaning “fire,” as it can produce sparks when struck against metal or stone. Pyrite commonly forms in cubes, clusters, nodules, or flat suns, and displays a dazzling, mirror-like finish that captures light brilliantly.

With a Mohs hardness of 6–6.5, Pyrite is relatively sturdy and suitable for various forms of jewellery, carvings, and decorative pieces. It naturally resists tarnish, making it a popular choice for collectors and metaphysical practitioners alike.

Major Pyrite deposits are found in Spain, Peru, Mexico, Italy, Russia, China, and the USA—with Peruvian Pyriteparticularly prized for its sharp, lustrous cubic formations.
