Crystal Knowledge - Jade (General)

About Jade

Jade is a revered and timeless gemstone that actually refers to two distinct minerals: Nephrite and Jadeite. Both are celebrated for their rich green hues but can also appear in white, lavender, yellow, and other colours depending on trace elements. Nephrite is a calcium magnesium iron-rich amphibole mineral, while Jadeite is a sodium aluminium-rich pyroxene mineral. Both possess a smooth, waxy texture and a distinctive toughness, making jade historically prized for carving, jewellery, and ceremonial objects.

Jade has been mined and treasured for thousands of years, with significant deposits found in Myanmar (Burma)—the primary source of high-quality Jadeite—alongside China, Canada, New Zealand, Russia, Guatemala, and the United States (notably Wyoming). Its hardness ranges between 6 and 7 on the Mohs scale, with Jadeite generally being harder and rarer.
