About Garnierite
Garnierite is a captivating, green-hued mineral often classified as a nickel-rich hydrous magnesium silicate. It is not a single mineral but rather a mixture of several nickel-bearing silicates, primarily serpentine and montmorillonite, which give it its distinctive vibrant apple to emerald green colours. Garnierite forms as a secondary mineral in the weathering zones of nickel ore deposits.
Primarily mined in New Caledonia, which is famous for its rich nickel resources, Garnierite is also found in Philippines, Russia, Greece, and Australia. With a Mohs hardness around 2.5 to 4.5, it is relatively soft and typically found in massive, rather than crystalline, formations.
