Crystal Knowledge - Banded Calcite

About Banded Mexican Calcite

Banded Mexican Calcite, sometimes called “Mexican Onyx” or “Onyx Marble,” is a captivating variety of Calcite (CaCO₃) prized for its layered, banded appearance and vibrant natural colours. Despite the “onyx” label, this stone is not true onyx—a type of quartz—but a much softer mineral - Calcite - (Mohs hardness 3) that is easier to carve into ornamental shapes, towers, and decorative pieces.

The Name and The Confusion
The term Mexican Calcite denotes the stone’s primary source—Mexico—though it can also be found in Pakistan, Peru, and Madagascar. Banded Calcite refers to its layered formation: calcium carbonate precipitates from mineral-rich water, often in caves or hot spring environments, and varying mineral content over time deposits distinct layers of colour.

The names Mexican Onyx or Onyx Marble are common in stone and craft trades due to the banded appearance, but they are technically misnomers. True onyx is a layered form of quartz with a hardness of 7, while Banded Mexican Calcite is significantly softer, making it ideal for carving into towers, spheres, and other ornamental shapes.

Appearance and Formation
Banded Mexican Calcite exhibits an impressive palette:

  • White or Creamy Base: Pure calcium carbonate forming the foundation.

  • Orange and Red: Iron oxide (hematite) inclusions create warm, fiery tones.

  • Pink: Trace manganese produces gentle pink layers, similar to Mangano Calcite.

  • Other Colors: Occasional layers of green, yellow, and brown add variety and depth.

Its natural crystal terminations, sometimes referred to as “teeth,” reflect calcite’s trigonal crystal system. Rhombohedral or scalenohedral growth creates sharp, geometric points, giving each piece a raw, natural edge alongside polished facets. Every specimen is a miniature geological story, revealing the slow, layered formation of mineral deposits over thousands or even millions of years.
