About Chrome Diopside

Chrome Diopside is an even rarer form of Diopside and is one of the most important minerals for discovery and other geological work. The compound inclusions of Chromium within Diopside give it that lustery rich green colour that nearly makes it look fake. These enhanced Diopside specimens are almost always found as precursors to the mineral Kimberlite. Kimberlite is an igneous rock and the most important source of Diamonds. They are believed to have been formed within the Earth’s mantle, some 90-275 miles deep within our home planet. Volcanic and cataclysmic activity pushed fragments through the crust and onto the surface, giving us all an opportunity to harness the energy of Inner Earth.

Chrome diopside gemstones have been around a long time, but were only officially discovered in 1988. Originally, chrome diopside was sourced from Russia's Eastern Siberia, but deposits have been found elsewhere in the world. Pakistan is now considered a significant supplier for gem-quality chromium diopside. Other locations of chrome diopside rough include Australia, Russia, Canada, Madagascar, Brazil and South Africa. The most valuable chromium diopside gems have a deep forest green similar to tsavorite garnet.

While chrome diopside is not difficult to come by, medium green stones over 2 carats are incredibly rare as the larger the stone the darker it tends to be, even appearing nearly black. Chrome diopside does not receive enhancements to increase colour or clarity, making it a naturally lovely untreated stone option for jewellery.
